Text effects using patterns

This tutorial will guide you in creating a simple text effect using the pattern presets in Photoshop. You will discover how to create your own pattern and apply it to a specific font’s outline.

1) Start off by creating a new Photoshop document with a width of 1000 and a height of 240 pixels.

Using a very bold font, type in your text and resize it to fit the window. In this case, the font size is around 40 pt, but your mileage will of course vary depending on the font you are using.

This will constitute the main outline for the pattern fill we will be applying.

2) Now, create another new Photoshop document at 100×24 pixels, setting the Background Contents field to Transparent . Type in your text as before and resize it to fit the canvas. This will, in effect, create a smaller version of the document we were working on earlier.

3) Select the entire work area with the marquee tool or by simply pressing CTRL+A. Go to Edit > Define Pattern and name the preset “patternfill”. You may now close the document.
