Creating a scatter brush
Saturday ~ March 03, 2007 by Pixelseed Posted in All free Photoshop tutorials
Recent Photoshop versions have come a long way in transforming the application into something a lot more than a mere photo manipulation tool. It is now an image creation tool, and as such, it also caters to people looking to emulate the traditional media experience on a real canvas. This tutorial will touch on some of the the basics of Photoshop’s Brush Engine and instruct you in creating a scatter brush for use in your own designs. I will go ahead and show you what we can create with our new brush: To begin with, create a a new photoshop document of 100 x 100 px dimensions. Add a new layer in the layers palette. This will be the layer that holds the fundamental shape of your scatter brush. Select the paintbrush from the toolbox or press B to activate it. The basic brush palette will now be active in the top left-hand corner of your screen. Select a hard edged round brush of about 20 px and set the hardness to 9 %. Move over to your canvas, and apply random dots of varying sizes to the layer. It is best if you apply smaller dots on the fringes, as this will be more useful for creating a seamless texture. Define this as a brush preset by clicking Edit > Define Brush Preset. As this is on the separate layer we created earlier, only the contents of this particular layer will become part of our new brush. Name the preset “scatter brush” and click OK.
